How many pavers do I need?

Divide the area by the size of one paver. In square feet that is 144 ÷ (length × width in inches): 4 × 8 in pavers work out to 4.5 per square foot, 6 × 9 to 2.67 and 12 × 12 to one. A 12 × 12 ft patio of 4 × 8 pavers is 144 square feet, or 648 pavers, before extra for cuts.

How many extra pavers should I order for cuts?

About 5% for running bond or stack patterns, 10% for a 90° herringbone and 15% for a 45° herringbone or other diagonal layouts, where every paver along the edge needs an angled cut.

How deep should the base be under pavers?

The paving industry's guidance (ICPI) calls for 4 inches of compacted gravel base under patios and walkways on well-drained soil and 6 inches where drainage is poor; driveways need 8 to 12 inches. In the UK, 100 mm of compacted MOT Type 1 is the usual minimum for patios and 150 mm for driveways.

How much sand goes under pavers?

One inch of coarse bedding sand, screeded level; thicker sand lets pavers settle unevenly. At 1 inch, a cubic yard of sand covers about 324 square feet. UK block paving usually sits on 30 to 50 mm of sharp sand.

How much polymeric sand do I need?

It depends on the joints. A 50 lb bag typically covers 75 to 100 square feet with narrow ⅛–¼ in joints, 40 to 60 with ⅜–½ in joints and 20 to 35 with ¾–1 in joints. Small pavers have more joint per square foot, so they use more; check the coverage printed on your bag.

How deep do I dig for a paver patio?

Add up the layers: paver thickness, 1 inch of sand and the base. For standard 2⅜-inch pavers over a 4-inch base, that is about 7⅜ inches below the finished surface.
