The year starts at the current year. In age mode, it is also the year your age refers to.

Which generation am I?

By the Pew Research Center definitions: Silent Generation, born 1928 to 1945; Baby Boomers, 1946 to 1964; Generation X, 1965 to 1980; Millennials, 1981 to 1996; Generation Z, 1997 to 2012. Someone born in 1990, for example, is a Millennial, and someone born in 2005 is Gen Z. Pew also lists a Greatest Generation, born 1927 or earlier. For those born in 2013 or later, the Census Bureau’s 2025 report uses the name Generation Alpha; we found no Pew definition of it.

How old is each generation?

Take the year and subtract the birth year, as Pew does: its 2019 article puts Millennials, born 1981 to 1996, at ages 23 to 38 in 2019, and its 2021 report puts Generation Z at ages 7 to 22 in 2019. The same subtraction gives 34 to 49 for Millennials and 18 to 33 for Gen Z in 2030. The calculator starts from the current year in your browser, and you can enter any other year to see the ages then.

When does Gen Z end and Gen Alpha begin?

Pew’s 2019 article drew the line between Millennials and the next generation at 1996 and 1997, and its 2021 report on Black Americans describes Generation Z as born between 1997 and 2012. We found no Pew definition of a generation after Gen Z. The U.S. Census Bureau’s April 2025 report on birth cohorts lists Generation Alpha as born in 2013 onward, with no end year, and says the ranges come from Pew.

Are generations official definitions?

No. Pew Research Center says generational categories are not scientifically defined and that their boundaries are not precise, definitive or universally agreed on; it suggests treating Gen Z, Millennial, Gen X and Baby Boomer as general reference points rather than scientific facts. The Census Bureau’s 2025 birth-cohort report says the Bureau has no official definitions for these cohorts and that the ranges may vary slightly across its products. Pew’s 2019 article does note that the Baby Boom, tied to the surge in births after World War II, is the one generation the Bureau has designated.

How long is a generation?

Pew’s 2023 guidance is that a typical generation spans 15 to 18 years. By the definitions above the Silent Generation spans 18 years, Baby Boomers 19, Generation X 16, Millennials 16 and Generation Z 16. People born in the first or last year of a span often have more in common with the neighboring generation, which is one reason Pew says it will use the labels sparingly.
