US federal holidays 2026
| Holiday | Date | Day off |
|---|
A holiday on a Saturday is observed on the Friday before, and one on a Sunday on the Monday after (5 U.S.C. 6103). State holidays are not included.
What day of the week does the new year start on?
Look at January 1 in the calendar above. January 1, 2026 was a Thursday, and January 1, 2027 falls on a Friday. Use the arrows to see any year.
Is 2026 a leap year?
No. A leap year is divisible by 4, except century years, which must be divisible by 400 — so 2000 was a leap year and 1900 was not. 2026 has 365 days; the next leap year is 2028.
What are the federal holidays in 2026?
New Year's Day (Jan 1), Martin Luther King Jr. Day (Jan 19), Washington's Birthday (Feb 16), Memorial Day (May 25), Juneteenth (Jun 19), Independence Day (Jul 4, observed Friday, Jul 3), Labor Day (Sep 7), Columbus Day (Oct 12), Veterans Day (Nov 11), Thanksgiving (Nov 26) and Christmas (Dec 25).
How many weeks are in a year?
A year of 365 days is 52 weeks and 1 day; a leap year is 52 weeks and 2 days. In ISO week numbering, a year that starts on a Thursday — like 2026 — has 53 weeks.
How do I print the calendar?
Press Print: the calendar prints without the site header and footer, with the months in a grid and the holiday list. Pick a year first with the arrows or by typing it in.
Why do some federal holidays move to a different day?
Federal law fixes some holidays on a date and others on a weekday. Holidays on a date, such as Independence Day, are observed on the Friday before when they fall on a Saturday, and on the Monday after when they fall on a Sunday. Holidays set by weekday, such as Labor Day on the first Monday of September, never move.
When did the calendar we use start?
The Gregorian calendar was introduced by Pope Gregory XIII in 1582, when October 4 was followed by October 15 in the countries that adopted it. Britain and its American colonies switched in 1752, when September 2 was followed by September 14. The calendar here applies the Gregorian rules to all years.
What is an ISO week?
ISO 8601 numbers weeks from Monday, and week 1 is the week that contains the year's first Thursday. Because of that rule, the days at the start of January can belong to week 52 or 53 of the previous year, and the last days of December can belong to week 1 of the next.
How the calendar is built
Every date is turned into a day number, and the weekday is the remainder of that number divided by seven, which is why the calendar can show any year correctly. Leap years follow the Gregorian rule: a year is a leap year if it is divisible by 4, except for century years, which must be divisible by 400. February then has 29 days. The federal holidays come from 5 U.S.C. 6103: New Year's Day, Independence Day, Juneteenth, Veterans Day and Christmas have fixed dates, and Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Washington's Birthday, Memorial Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day and Thanksgiving fall on a set weekday of a month.
Worked example for 2027
January 1, 2027 is a Friday. 2027 is not a leap year, so it has 365 days, and its last ISO week is week 52. Holidays that move because they fall on a weekend: Juneteenth (Saturday, June 19) is observed on Friday, June 18; Independence Day (Sunday, July 4) is observed on Monday, July 5; Christmas Day (Saturday, December 25) is observed on Friday, December 24. All other federal holidays in 2027 fall on weekdays. Use the arrows above the calendar to move to any other year and compare.
Common mistakes
- Counting the observed day as the holiday itself. When July 4 falls on a Saturday, the federal day off is Friday, July 3, but the holiday date is still July 4. The calendar shows both.
- Assuming a leap year every four years. The years 1900 and 2100 are not leap years, while 2000 was.
- Assuming private employers follow the federal list. Banks, schools, markets and companies set their own days off. The calendar shows federal holidays only.
